KMOX reporter Kevin Killeen interviewed Winston Calvert today on the front steps of City Hall. As KMOX reported:
City counselor Winston Calvert says he’s ready to defend the city’s right to set its own minimum wage, based on the city charter.
“It gives the city the authority to do all things, whatsoever, expedient for promoting and maintaining the comfort, education, morals, peace, government, health, welfare, trade, commerce, and manufactures of the city or its inhabitants,” Calvert says. “I would say that gives the city a significant amount of authority in this area.” The charter does not mention minimum wages, but Calvert says the “all things whatsoever” clause covers that.
